A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
