Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
