The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
