Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications need to be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs report a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
