Space Traveler Reveals Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the landing.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Months following reaching space, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of outer space.
