The Fifth Toy Story Film Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Versus a Tablet Computer

Exactly 30 years after the first Toy Story movie debuted, launching the animation giant as a leading animation studio and bringing viewers to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

In 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a glimpse into the plot but keeping viewers curious how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Toys

The preview reveals Bonnie — who received Andy's toys when he grew up — receiving a brand new plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She gets her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the toys seem to view it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer doesn't touch on is why Woody is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), traveling with a carnival and helping prize toys locate loving owners.

Certainly, Pixar will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have come back with Woody. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Connections from the Last Installment

Fortunately, some elements are continuing from the prior film. The final act Woody did before departing for his new life was pass his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (the voice actor), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. The clip shows the insignia attached to her shirt.

It is hoped she is still the driving force among the toys.

Toy Story 5 debuts on the scheduled date.
