Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge specific rulings from the official, mirroring the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
