On his first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious start to his administration.

An Unprecedented Leader

The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Defying counsel to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for fear of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
